Free QR Code reader and scanner
Upload a photo of a QR code, or point your camera at one. The encoded text appears below so you can copy it.
A free QR code reader decodes the text stored in a QR square. This page is also a free QR code scanner: upload a photo or start the camera. The payload appears as copyable text. ForQRCode runs in the browser, so the image stays on your device.
How to scan a QR code
Read a QR code from a photo or the camera on this page.
- 1
Stay on this page
Open the free QR code reader on a phone or computer. You do not need an app or an account.
- 2
Upload a photo or start the camera
Choose a PNG, JPG, GIF, or WebP, or tap Start camera and hold the QR code in view. Keep all four corners of the square in the frame.
- 3
Copy the decoded text
The payload appears in the data field. Copy a URL, WiFi string, vCard, or plain text and use it like any other snippet.
What a QR code reader does
A QR code reader looks at the dark and light modules in the square and turns them back into the original payload. A QR code scanner is the same job with a live camera. This free QR code reader does both: a still photo from your library, or a live scan.
Most codes store a website. Others store a WiFi login, a vCard, an email draft, a calendar event, or a payment string such as PayPal, UPI, PIX, or EPC. This scanner prints whatever was encoded. It does not open the link for you, which is useful when you want to read the URL before you visit it.
Decoding runs in the browser. ForQRCode does not upload the photo from this tool to a server. That matters when the square holds a password, a contact card, or a payment address.
If the QR code will not scan
- 1
Hold the whole square in view, including the three finder corners.
- 2
Add light. A dark photo or a glossy print often fails.
- 3
Try a still photo if the live camera feed is shaky or cropped.
- 4
Use the barcode reader for linear barcodes such as EAN-13 or Code 128. This page is for QR squares only.
Questions about this QR reader
What is a free QR code reader?
A free QR code reader turns the pattern in a QR square into text. This page does that in the browser from a photo or the camera, with no charge and no account.
What is a free QR code scanner?
A free QR code scanner is a QR code reader that uses the camera. On ForQRCode the two are the same page: upload a file or start the camera.
Can I scan a QR code without an app?
Yes. Open this page in a mobile or desktop browser, allow the camera if you want a live scan, or upload a screenshot. Phone cameras can also open QR URLs on their own. This reader is useful when you want the raw text, including WiFi strings and vCards.
Does this QR scanner work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Use Safari or Chrome, grant camera permission for a live scan, or upload a photo from the library. The camera needs HTTPS.
Does ForQRCode store the image I scan?
No. Decoding runs in the browser. The image is not uploaded for this tool.
Why will my QR code not scan?
Keep all four corners in the frame, add light, and avoid covering the finder squares. A blurry or cropped screenshot often fails. Try a sharper photo.
Can this reader scan barcodes?
No. This page reads QR codes. Use the free barcode reader for EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 128, and similar formats.
Is the QR code reader free?
Yes. You can scan on this page without an account. Saving codes in the dashboard is a separate product.
